The Vancouver Canucks have officially traded Kiefer Sherwood to the San Jose Sharks. This deal, finalized on Monday, includes a second-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft, another second-round pick in 2027, and defenseman Cole Clayton.
Kiefer Sherwood’s Performance
Kiefer Sherwood, a forward, has had a notable season. He leads the Canucks with 17 goals in just 44 games. At 30 years old, he is nearing the end of a two-year contract worth $3 million, with a $1.5 million average annual value. Sherwood will become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.
Throughout his career, he has accumulated 121 points, which includes 60 goals and 61 assists, in 309 regular-season games. His experience spans multiple teams, including the Anaheim Ducks, Colorado Avalanche, Nashville Predators, and Vancouver Canucks. In addition, he has participated in eight Stanley Cup Playoff games, recording two points.
Impact on the Canucks
The Canucks currently hold a record of 16 wins, 27 losses, and 5 overtime losses, placing them at the bottom of the NHL standings. General manager Patrik Allvin explained the rationale behind the trade, stating: “We would like to thank Kiefer for all his hard work and dedication in Vancouver. Given our current position and the focus of our rebuild, making this move was necessary to help enhance our roster.”
Details About Cole Clayton
In the trade, the Canucks also acquired Cole Clayton, a 25-year-old defenseman. Clayton has five points, including two goals and three assists, in 33 games this season in the American Hockey League (AHL). This season marks his fifth year in the league and he previously played for Cleveland. Clayton is expected to report to the Abbotsford team in the AHL.
San Jose Sharks’ Current Standing
The Sharks have achieved a record of 24 wins, 20 losses, and 3 overtime losses. They are currently tied for the second wild card spot in the Western Conference playoffs. They face the Florida Panthers on Monday, which will be a crucial game for their playoff aspirations.
