Rays Assign Gavin Lux to Second Base Role Exclusively

The Tampa Bay Rays have made a significant move by acquiring Gavin Lux in a three-team trade that involved sending Josh Lowe to another team. This transaction has drawn attention from many baseball analysts, including Marc Topkin of The Tampa Bay Times, who spoke with Rays President of Baseball Operations, Erik Neander.

Commitment to Second Base Position

Neander emphasized that the Rays plan to assign Lux to second base exclusively. He stated that the team believes Lux performs best when he concentrates on this position alone. Last season, Lux played as a utility player for the Cincinnati Reds. He logged just 16 starts at second base, spending the majority of his time in left field and designated hitter roles.

Neander remarked, “The way things played out in Cincinnati last year, there was more opportunity in left field and DH, but his work was not focused at second base.” The Rays intend to provide Lux with clear expectations, allowing him to develop his skills and routines specifically for second base.

Gavin Lux’s Defensive History

Throughout his career, Gavin Lux has primarily played second base, achieving above-average ratings in Defensive Runs Saved and Outs Above Average between 2019 and 2022. Unfortunately, he missed the entire 2023 season due to a torn ACL. Before his injury, the Los Angeles Dodgers contemplated shifting him to shortstop, a plan they later abandoned due to concerns about his throwing accuracy during Spring Training.

While his arm challenges might be less impactful at second base, his overall defensive performance has seen a decline recently. The Rays are optimistic that by focusing Lux solely on second base, they can enhance his performance and address past concerns.

Impact on Team Roster

The confirmation of Lux as an everyday second baseman is expected to have significant implications for the team’s roster structure. Taylor Walls is anticipated to start the season at shortstop, which will allow prospect Carson Williams to return to Triple-A for further development.

  • Richie Palacios was previously a frontrunner for second base time but will now see reduced opportunities.
  • Palacios had a limited season last year due to injuries but could potentially play in the corner outfield.
  • Both Lux and Palacios share a similar skillset, focusing on on-base ability but exhibiting limited power.

Outfield Competition

The Rays have an open competition for their outfield positions, particularly around Cedric Mullins, who is expected to be the regular center fielder. Other players in the mix for playing time include:

  • Jake Fraley
  • Jonny DeLuca
  • Chandler Simpson
  • Justyn-Henry Malloy
  • Ryan Vilade
  • Jacob Melton (acquired through trade)

With multiple left-handed hitters vying for positions, the Rays are poised for an exciting season with Gavin Lux firmly established as their second baseman. The focus on developing his skills at this position will be crucial for both his career and the overall success of the team in the upcoming season.
