Recovery and investigation

Emergency calls reached Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and Woodlands Township Fire Department as early as 6 a.m. Local authorities were alerted about a lost swimmer around 7:30 a.m., Woodlands Fire Chief Palmer Buck said.

Rescue teams found her body just after 9:30 a.m., roughly three hours after she vanished. Officials said her body had sunk about 10 feet and she was pronounced dead on the shore.

Race conditions and response

Rescuers conducted searches while the triathlon continued. The activity worsened water visibility and complicated dive operations, Chief Buck said.

Eyewitness accounts

A volunteer described panic among bystanders as the swimmer went under. He recalled a veteran racer clinging to a kayak and staring blankly.

The helper dove repeatedly while attempting a rescue. He said he felt the woman’s body with his foot but could not recover her.

The volunteer had attended to bring his daughter to the event. He later wrote that rescuers did everything possible and expressed deep sorrow.

Athlete profile

Flávia was an accomplished triathlete from Brazil. She had built a large online following and competed at elite events.
