How Ruby joined the family

Cuoco first met Ruby while filming a television segment at an east valley shelter. She returned the next day to adopt the dog after she could not stop thinking about her.

Over the years the couple shared photos of Ruby. Some images show Pelphrey holding the pup. Others show their three-year-old daughter, Matilda, gently patting her.

Names and character

Ruby carried several nicknames, including Snowball and “Ruby from the Block.” Pelphrey noted her angelic temperament.

He also said Ruby had a strong personality and “punched well above her weight class.” Both actors expressed how much they will miss her.

The couple emphasized that giving pets a loving life matters most. They acknowledged the pain of losing long-time animal companions.

Cuoco’s history with pets

Cuoco has long been an animal advocate and often shares life with her dogs. In 2024 she discussed rehoming another dog, Shirley.

Shirley had lived with Cuoco since she was six weeks old. Cuoco said aggressive fights with Pelphrey’s German Shepherd, Blue, prompted the difficult decision to rehome Shirley.

Shirley’s final months

Shirley later developed a very aggressive bone cancer. She died at almost 14 years old after receiving care from a pet handler named Tony and his wife, Angie.

Cuoco called the choice to rehome Shirley excruciating. She thanked those who cared for the dog in her final months.
