Mountain Rescue Service Alerts Tourists to Dangerous Conditions
On Saturday, the Mountain Rescue Service of the Bulgarian Red Cross issued a warning about unsafe conditions for mountain tourism. Rescue teams said visibility is poor above the tree line and weather is changeable. Hikers face increased risk when moving through deep or unstable snow.
Current mountain conditions
Cloud and fog cover most high terrain. Temperatures currently sit above freezing in lower zones. Winds are light to moderate, but gusts are possible at higher elevations.
Rescuers also reported that some trails are soft enough to let hikers sink into the snow. Ski facilities are no longer operating for the season.
Weather forecast
The National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology expects persistent cloud cover over the mountains. Cumulonimbus clouds are likely to bring heavy rain and thunderstorms in many areas.
Southwestern mountain ranges will see the most intense conditions. Above roughly 1,800 meters, precipitation is forecast as snow.
Wind and temperature outlook
Winds will shift from the north-northeast and strengthen to moderate or strong levels. Maximum temperatures will be near 8°C at 1,200 meters. At 2,000 meters, readings should reach about 2°C.
Safety guidance
The Mountain Rescue Service alerts tourists to take extra precautions before heading into the mountains. Carry appropriate gear and check updated forecasts before any trip.
- Avoid exposed ridges in thunderstorm-prone weather.
- Be prepared for sudden snowfall above 1,800 meters.
- Delay non-essential hikes until conditions improve.
