Eight Hospitalized Following Kyiv Shooting, Reports Mayor
Eight people were hospitalized, the mayor reports, after a mass shooting in Kyiv’s Holosiivskyi district on Saturday. Six people were killed in the attack, officials said.
Incident and police response
Authorities said the shooter was a Russian-born man. He used an automatic rifle to fire on passers-by.
The gunman then barricaded himself inside a supermarket with hostages. Police tried to negotiate with him for 40 minutes.
When talks failed, officers stormed the store and shot the suspect dead. The supermarket has been cordoned off and remains closed.
Victims and medical care
Among the wounded is a child whose parents were killed in the attack. Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the child is in moderate condition.
One adult remains in critical condition. Klitschko added that all injured people are receiving necessary medical care.
President Volodymyr Zelenskiy had earlier said 14 people were injured in the incident.
Investigation and legal questions
Ukraine’s security service has opened an inquiry and is treating the episode as a terrorist act. Police have not yet identified a motive.
Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said the attacker displayed clear signs of mental instability. He called for a probe into how the shooter obtained the medical certificates needed to renew a gun permit.
Klymenko said the ministry will finalise a bill on civilian firearms. He also said he believes citizens should have the right to armed self-defence.
Under current rules, Ukrainians may own only hunting weapons.
Scene and community reaction
Windows at the supermarket showed bullet holes, and bloodstains were visible nearby. Flowers were placed near a residential building where the first victims were shot.
A local resident described people grabbing children and fleeing the area. Witnesses reported a man shooting with a machine gun, she added.
