In December, New York won the NBA Cup tournament. The franchise is openly chasing its next championship banner.

Hawks season snapshot

Atlanta began the year unevenly, sitting 18-21 before major roster moves. The team traded long-time star Trae Young.

The Young deal brought CJ McCollum. A deadline swap sent Kristaps Porziņģis away and added Jonathan Kuminga.

GM Onsi Saleh orchestrated the midseason overhaul. The club surged after the All-Star break, going 20-6.

Atlanta finished second in defensive rating after the turnaround. They ranked fourth in net rating and third in plus-minus.

Jalen Johnson emerged as a first-time All-Star. He averaged 22.5 points, 10.3 rebounds, and 7.9 assists.

Cleaning the Glass placed Johnson in the 98th percentile for assist-to-usage ratio. Nickeil Alexander-Walker jumped from 8.4 to 20.8 points per game after joining Atlanta.

Dyson Daniels and Onyeka Okongwu anchor the defense. Coach Quin Snyder adjusted rotations successfully, though backup Jock Landale sustained a sprained ankle.

New York took a lead early in the Dec. 27 game in Atlanta and held it. The April 6 meeting in Atlanta ended after a late review of a McCollum half-court attempt.

Walt Frazier averaged 25.6 points per game during that series. The 1999 postseason featured an eighth-seed Knicks sweep of Atlanta in the second round.

Marcus Camby had a memorable poster dunk over Dikembe Mutombo in that 1999 matchup. The most recent playoff clash occurred in 2021.

In 2021, Atlanta won the opening round 4-1. Trae Young produced an iconic Game 1 moment, and the Hawks advanced to the conference finals.
