X Debuts New Cashtags Feature on iOS in US and Canada

X has rolled out an updated Cashtag format to iPhone users after a January preview. The company initially targeted users in the US and Canada and then expanded availability on iOS more broadly.

What the new Cashtags do

The feature embeds live market information inside posts. Active asset listings can be added to tweets and tapped for details.

  • Tap a Cashtag to view posts that mention the asset alongside a live price chart.
  • X will suggest matching stocks and crypto tokens when users search or post a Cashtag address.
  • The system aims to match chatter with the correct stock or token automatically.

Product team comments

Nikita Bier, X’s head of product, framed Cashtags as part of the platform’s financial focus. Bier said billions of dollars move daily based on what users read on Timeline.

She described the rollout as a service that brings real-time financial data directly into the app. Bier later confirmed the feature’s global availability on iOS.

Strategic context

The move is a step toward deeper finance functionality inside the app. X intends to add more banking and payments features over time.

Elon Musk has discussed turning the platform into an “everything app” similar to China’s WeChat. His long-term plan traces back to X.com and a PayPal-era focus on financial services.

Ambitions for X Money

Musk has said the app should handle payments, trading and loans. He summarized the goal bluntly: “If it involves money. It’ll be on our platform.”

X plans an early access release for an X Money program. That rollout may proceed even while licensing questions remain unresolved.

Regulatory obstacles

X has been denied a money transmitter license in some U.S. states. Those denials complicate any plan to offer payments and banking services.

Regulators and lawmakers have been vocal. Senator Elizabeth Warren warned that the proposal could pose risks to consumers, national security, and financial stability.

Filmogaz.com reported in 2023 that Musk told staff he wanted the app to facilitate payments and trading. Critics say licensing and oversight will shape what the company can actually deliver.

Where this leaves Cashtags

For now, Cashtags provide in-app market context and discovery. Bier called them the first step toward making X a hub for finance and crypto communities.

The initial rollout on iPhone concentrates on the US and Canada. X has since broadened access to iOS users outside those markets.
