Ford Recalls 1.4 Million F-150 Trucks for Gearshift Problem

Ford is recalling roughly 1.4 million F-150 pickups in the United States. The action follows a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration probe into unexpected downshifts and a possible gearshift problem.

Which vehicles are affected

The recall covers model year 2015–2017 Ford F-150 trucks with the 6R80 transmission. Owners can check their vehicle identification number to confirm coverage.

Regulator findings and reported incidents

NHTSA said the investigation found reports of unintended downshifts. Two injuries and one crash were potentially linked to the issue.

Investigators expanded a safety probe earlier this year. A preliminary evaluation first opened in March of the previous year.

Likely cause

Ford’s review points to electrical connections degrading over time. Heat and vibration can wear connections and cause signal loss from the transmission range sensor.

Incorrect sensor signals can trigger an unintended downshift. That is the suspected root of the gearshift problem affecting these F-150 trucks.

Remedy and dealer actions

Dealers will install a powertrain control module software update at no cost to owners. If certain diagnostic trouble codes appeared before the update, dealers will replace the lead frame under an extended warranty.

Owners will be notified by mail and instructed to visit a Ford or Lincoln dealer for the remedy.
