Australian Runners Celebrate 50th Anniversary at Boston Marathon: A Special Milestone
With the Boston Marathon days away, competitors from around the world are arriving in the city. Among them are Peter Geraghty, 76, and his wife Kerry, 73, from Brisbane, Australia.
Pre-race gatherings and expo
Festivities begin Friday morning when elite athletes meet with the media. The Marathon Expo opens at the Hynes Convention Center the same morning.
Runners will collect official bibs at the expo. Vendors will display shoes, food, and running equipment for the weekend.
Fan Fest and finish line access
The official Fan Fest opens at Boston City Hall Plaza at 3 p.m. The finish line will be open to the public at the same time for photos.
The Geraghtys’ milestone
The couple have completed a combined 36 marathons, but never Boston. They visited the finish line on April 16, 2026.
The Australian runners plan to run together to celebrate their upcoming 50th anniversary. They said they will enjoy the crowds and support, and race time is not a priority for them.
Personal reflections
Peter described the race as the sport’s most prestigious event when speaking to WBZ-TV. The marathon will coincide with the Geraghtys’ 50th wedding anniversary, making it a special milestone.
Security briefing and race route
Local, state, and federal officials will hold their annual security news conference on Friday. The briefing will cover public safety and medical preparations.
The Boston Marathon starts just after 9 a.m. Monday in Hopkinton, Massachusetts. The 26.2-mile course runs through Ashland, Framingham, Natick, Wellesley, Newton, and Brookline.
The race finishes on Boylston Street in Boston. This year marks the 130th running of the event.
