Johnny Depp Transforms into Scrooge for ‘Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol’ Comeback Role

Johnny Depp appeared at Paramount’s CinemaCon presentation to debut his adaptation of Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol. He introduced footage and spoke directly to an audience of theater owners and distributors.

CinemaCon debut

Depp walked onstage to Alex Warren’s song “Ordinary.” He wore his signature hat, sunglasses and scarves. The room greeted him with sustained applause and he thanked attendees, saying he loved them.

The presentation took place Thursday during CinemaCon. The convention runs April 13–16 this year. CinemaCon is the official gathering for exhibitors and Hollywood studios, organized by Cinema United.

Transformation and footage

The footage showed Depp heavily made up. He appears aged, with gray tones, a prominent nose and altered features.

The look drew comparisons to Jim Carrey’s stylized roles. Yet some of Depp’s familiar swagger remained.

On the source material

Depp said he has been obsessed with A Christmas Carol since childhood. He noted the lasting impact of Reginald Owen’s 1930s take and said that did not stop him from attempting his own version.

Cast and creative team

Ti West directed the film. Nathaniel Halpern adapted Charles Dickens’ 1843 novella for screen.

The ensemble includes Andrea Riseborough as the Ghost of Christmas Past. Tramell Tillman plays the Ghost of Christmas Present. Ian McKellen appears as Jacob Marley. Rupert Grint is cast as Bob Cratchit.

Daisy Ridley, Sam Claflin, Charlie Murphy, Arthur Conti and Ellie Bamber round out the supporting cast.

Plot outline

The story follows Ebenezer Scrooge as he dismisses festivities and utters “humbugs.” He is visited by three spirits who prompt his transformation.

Release and career context

The film is scheduled to hit theaters on Nov. 13. This marks Depp’s return to major studio releases since 2018’s Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.

He was later removed from a subsequent Warner Bros. franchise entry amid negative headlines and related litigation following his split from Amber Heard. After that, Depp shifted toward international productions.

He appeared in the period drama Jeanne du Barry and spoke at its Cannes premiere in 2023. At Cannes he said he did not feel boycotted and that he did not think much about Hollywood.
