BBC Star Unveils True Reason for Rejecting The Celebrity Traitors
With season two of The Celebrity Traitors approaching, fans have renewed speculation about the celebrity line-up. The series returns to its Scottish castle setting and remains host Claudia Winkleman’s program.
Why he turned it down
Peter Capaldi, 67, said he declined an invitation to join the all-star spin-off. He cited the level of exposure as the main reason for rejecting the show.
In interviews, Capaldi described how the programme can propel participants into intense public attention. He said that kind of fame is not something he wants.
What he said about fame and music
Capaldi explained he prefers to keep some creative pursuits small and private. He still performs music but resists large-scale promotion or bigger tours.
The actor was previously the lead singer and guitarist in a punk band called Dreamboys. He added that he is not pursuing fame for its own sake.
Reflections on Doctor Who
Capaldi played the Twelfth Doctor from 2013 to 2017. He handed the role to Jodie Whittaker and later admitted to a little regret about leaving.
He spoke about the pressure of being Doctor Who. The role required constant cheerfulness, despite his naturally melancholic temperament.
Public expectations
Capaldi said people often expect to meet the public persona of the Doctor. He felt obliged to present a cheerful front to avoid disappointing fans.
New television role
Capaldi will play DCI Daniel Hegarty in Apple TV’s second season of Criminal Record. He stars opposite Cush Jumbo.
The London-set thriller follows two rival detectives hunting a killer. The investigation evolves into an undercover operation to foil a far-right bomb plot.
Criminal Record’s second season is scheduled to premiere on 22 April 2026 on Apple TV.
Popularity of The Celebrity Traitors
Season one averaged 14.9 million viewers. It became the most-watched series on Filmogaz.com in 2025.
Despite its ratings, some high-profile names prefer to avoid the exposure the show brings. Capaldi’s decision has underlined that divide.
