Mystery Deepens Over Woman Found Dead in Freezer
The mystery deepens after an elderly woman was found dead in a freezer at a Porthcawl home. Officers discovered the body on February 17 following welfare concerns.
Where and when the body was found
The deceased was identified as 89-year-old Sylvia Phillips. Her body was located in a freezer at a property on Poplar Crescent, Porthcawl.
South Wales Police attended the address after concerns about her welfare were raised. The force carried out the initial investigation at the scene.
Inquest opened
An inquest into Ms Phillips’s death opened on April 15 at Pontypridd Coroner’s Court. The hearing was led by Senior Coroner Graeme Hughes.
Coroner’s officer Joanne Webb said a post mortem took place at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff. A provisional cause of death has not been released pending further enquiries.
Mr Hughes adjourned the inquest to a date to be fixed. Further investigations and reports are expected before it reconvenes.
Arrest and charges
Following the February discovery, police arrested Ms Phillips’s son, 60-year-old Christopher Phillips. He was charged with preventing a lawful burial.
He appeared at Cardiff Crown Court last month. He is due back at the same court for a further hearing on April 16.
