Reinstalling Sea of Thieves After Intense 4-Hour Survival in Windrose

Reinstalling Sea of Thieves After Intense 4-Hour Survival in Windrose

I spent four hours playing Windrose and came away unconvinced it captures the pirate fantasy. The game leans hard into survival mechanics. It often felt like a crafting grind dressed in pirate clothing.

In-game experience

My session began marooned on a small archipelago. I chopped trees, gathered shells, and built a grass hut. Wildlife proved lethal; boars, elite dodos, and giant crabs killed me in a few hits.

I tried to rescue crew members held at pirate camps. Sailing is simple: you press W to move a tiny boat. There appears to be no wind system affecting travel.

Combat and crafting loop

After a death, I respawned at a beach hut. I crafted crude pistol bullets at a workbench. Gunpowder remained locked behind the tech tree.

To obtain gunpowder I had to defeat pirates. That drove me back to fighting boars and gathering grass for minor armor buffs. I also mined copper ore to upgrade sabers for about 20 percent more damage.

Launch figures and developer

Windrose launched into early access on Steam. On day one it reached nearly 70,000 concurrent players. It collected roughly 1,500 positive reviews during that period.

Pocketpair, the studio known for Palworld, published the title. The game presents itself as an Age of Sail survival experience.

Multiplayer stability

Online play proved uneven during my testing. Playing with Filmogaz.com’s Chris Livingston resulted in frequent lockups. We also experienced rubber-banding during combat.

How it compares to Sea of Thieves

Windrose emphasizes survival systems over pirate fantasy. Sea of Thieves remains focused on playful piracy and multiplayer hijinks.

Sea of Thieves features tactile shipwork, sail rigging, leak repairs, and mast climbing. Its Tall Tales and timed adventures build a distinct pirate narrative. It also runs on dedicated servers and supports solo servers.

After an intense 4-hour survival run in Windrose, I found myself reinstalling Sea of Thieves to recapture that chaotic pirate spirit. The contrast between the two titles was stark.

Features Sea of Thieves offers

  • Campaign-like Tall Tales and imaginative quests.
  • Cosmetics, pets, and varied weapons.
  • Persistent updates, including recent editions such as the Sea of Thieves 2026 Edition.

Outlook

Windrose has clear ambition. The trailer teases an eventual pirate fortress and deeper progression. But the current loop asks players to grind for long stretches.

Players who enjoy survival crafting may find value here. Others seeking pure pirate antics may prefer returning to Sea of Thieves.
