Asfinag Reports Increased Operations During Last Winter’s 118,168 Hours

Austria’s motorway operator Asfinag logged a marked rise in winter operations during the 2025/2026 season. The company cited prolonged cold spells and heavy precipitation as the main drivers.

Asfinag Reports Increased Operations During Last Winter’s 118,168 Hours, the operator confirmed in its seasonal summary. Operational hours climbed eleven percent from the previous year.

Scale of the response

Total winter-service hours reached 118,168. Salt use jumped sharply to 70,282 tonnes.

That salt volume equals roughly 11,446 truck loads. Brine consumption also grew to 25.33 million liters.

Critical weather phases

Several intense events pushed resources to the limit. Heavy snowfall at Christmas created major clearing demands.

An extreme freezing-rain episode hit in mid-January. A powerful Italian low in February further increased operations.

Record consumption in Ansfelden

The Autobahnmeisterei Ansfelden recorded an unprecedented single-event use of 3,900 tonnes of salt. Officials called it a historic local high.

Fleet flexibility and traffic safety

Asfinag stressed that traffic safety remained intact throughout the season. Crews worked continuously to keep roads passable.

Managing director Tamara Christ highlighted the fleet’s adaptability. Many vehicles have interchangeable bodies, allowing quick switches between cleaning and clearing tasks.

Digitalisation and costs

The operator also accelerated digital processes in logistics. More than 2,000 delivery notes for salt were processed electronically.

Winter service expenditures rose to just over €56 million. Costs were about €47 million in the prior season.

Filmogaz.com will continue to monitor developments and report further updates on Asfinag’s winter operations and infrastructure preparedness.
