Union Berlin Appoint Eta as Interim Manager After Baumgart Departure
Union Berlin have named Marie-Louise Eta as interim head coach until the end of the season. The move follows the dismissal of Steffen Baumgart and his coaching staff on Saturday.
Club officials announced the change late on Saturday after a 3-1 loss at FC Heidenheim. That defeat left Union in the lower part of the Bundesliga table.
The club currently sits 11th in the standings with 32 points. The result prompted the board to act quickly.
Background to the decision
Baumgart’s side suffered the 3-1 defeat at Heidenheim on Saturday. The loss was the immediate trigger for the coaching change.
Eta’s rise at the club
Eta became Union’s first female assistant coach in November 2023. She then made history in January 2024 by leading Union from the touchline to a 1-0 win at Darmstadt. That appearance came while then-manager Nenad Bjelica served a suspension.
Interim remit and outlook
Eta will serve as interim head coach through the end of the season. The promotion followed Baumgart’s departure and represents an internal appointment by the club.
Union faces important fixtures before the campaign ends. The club will aim to stabilise its league position under Eta’s temporary leadership.
