Stellantis Negotiates Opel EV Development with China’s Leapmotor

Stellantis is in advanced negotiations with Chinese automaker Leapmotor to develop an Opel-branded electric SUV. The vehicle would be produced at the company’s Zaragoza plant in Spain. Mass production is scheduled to begin in 2028, with a target of 50,000 units per year.

Deal structure and development roles

Under the terms under discussion, Leapmotor would provide core technologies. Supplies would include electronic and electrical components. Opel would be responsible for the vehicle’s exterior design.

Much of the engineering work would take place in China. The project carries the internal codename O3U. Talks started in late 2025 and could conclude as soon as this month.

Common architecture and existing projects

The Opel model would share architecture with Leapmotor’s B10 compact SUV. The B10 is also slated for assembly at Zaragoza later this year for Europe. That platform link aims to shorten development time and lower costs.

Strategic context

The proposal seeks to reduce Stellantis’ EV development costs and speed delivery. The alliance would also help raise plant utilisation in Europe. Stellantis is shifting emphasis toward petrol-electric hybrids after a recent multibillion-dollar writedown.

Management plans include a new long-term business strategy. CEO Antonio Filosa will present that plan on May 21.

Scope beyond Opel

Early discussions cover other models. Stellantis has studied using Leapmotor technology for the next-generation Opel Mokka B. Production of that model may move to Spain from France in time.

Preliminary talks also include a possible Alfa Romeo model built on the same architecture. Conversations have explored smaller A-segment cars as well, which would need a separate production line.

Company ties and public statements

Stellantis bought roughly one-fifth of Leapmotor in 2023. The two firms also operate a joint venture, Leapmotor International, for sales outside China. Stellantis has said there is regular engagement but offered no further comment on specifics.

Leapmotor has confirmed it is negotiating with partners, including Stellantis. The Chinese firm has emphasised its role as a supplier of self-developed components, and it has not publicly committed to platform-level collaboration.

Market aims and volumes

The project aims to help Stellantis counter competition from BYD and other Chinese brands. Opel accounted for about 21% of Stellantis’ 2025 European sales. Germany remains Opel’s largest national market.

Target production of 50,000 vehicles per year would help optimise capacity at Zaragoza. Leapmotor has said it expects to begin some vehicle production in Spain from October.
