2026 Aintree Grand National: Meet the Sole Grey Horse and Its Odds

2026 Aintree Grand National: Meet the Sole Grey Horse and Its Odds

Grey horses have long struggled to conquer Aintree’s famous fences. Only three greys have won in 177 renewals of the race.

Historic grey success at Aintree

The first grey to win was The Lamb in 1868. He returned to win again three years later.

The second grey to prevail did so at a 28/1 starting price. The most recent grey winner was Neptune Collonges, who edged Sunnyhillboy in a photo finish in 2012.

One grey in the 2026 field

For the 2026 Aintree Grand National, there is a single grey entered. The presence of just one grey continues the breed’s rarity among winners.

Marble Sands — the sole grey horse

Marble Sands is the only grey declared for this year. He is trained by David Killahena and Graeme McPherson.

Kielan Woods will take the ride. The gelding is ten years old and carries 10st 5lbs.

Recent form and prep

  • Won a 10-runner handicap at Cheltenham over 27 furlongs last November.
  • Finished second in the Rowland Meyrick at Wetherby over the Christmas period.
  • Ran around in last year’s Topham but was not at his best on that occasion.
  • Has been kept fresh since the Wetherby run with this target in mind.
