Jack Whitehall Praises The Fat Badger’s Roast, Snubs The Box
Jack Whitehall lives in Notting Hill with his fiancée, Roxy Horner, and their daughter, Elsie. He recently reflected on his London life and local favourites.
Home and early career
His parents lived in Putney when he started out in London. He wanted to move north or east to escape them.
His mother found a flat within walking distance of their house. From its balcony you could, with binoculars, see into his parents’ home.
His first job was at the Spencer Arms pub in Putney. He began testing stand-up material on customers while taking orders.
Work and public image
He says he was not a particularly good employee. That pub job remains his first and only formal employment.
He recommends a comedy club for a first date. It helps to test whether two people share the same sense of humour.
Nightlife and dining
Whitehall praised the Fat Badger’s Sunday lunch. He singled out its roast as a memorable London meal.
He attended his stag night at The Box. He now feels that venue is beginning to feel too youthful for him.
He also mentions the Devonshire for nights out. It has a back room with a piano and a lively atmosphere.
Local social spots
He names a friend, Pete Brown, who runs the Forest Road Taproom in east London. He describes it as a great hangout.
For shopping, he says he orders everything through Zapp. He joked he should support small businesses more.
Beauty and fitness
When filming requires it, he visits FaceGym for facial treatments. He described the sessions as effective despite sounding odd.
After seeing video of himself running, he bought a treadmill. He now exercises in his basement with curtains drawn.
Notting Hill Carnival incident
During Notting Hill Carnival he hosted friends at his flat. He left the front door open after letting someone use the toilet.
The gathering swelled quickly to about 200 people. He called the experience chaotic and overwhelming, and joked the police seemed part of the party.
Friends, culture and other notes
He names Richard Osman as the smartest person he knows, though he says they are not close friends. He admires Osman from afar.
If made mayor for a day, he would delegate decisions and take credit for the ideas. He also cites a favourite local art sight.
He enjoys the paintings that hang along the railings outside Hyde Park. He views them as one of his favourite pieces of public art.
