Lidl Launches First Pub, Expands Discount Grocery Chain

German discount grocery chain Lidl is expanding its reach by launching its first-ever pub. This new venture is set to open in summer 2024 in Dundonald, a suburb of East Belfast, Northern Ireland.

Lidl’s First Pub in Dundonald

The pub will be located adjacent to one of Lidl’s existing grocery stores. It will feature a seating capacity for 60 patrons and encompass an area of 60 square meters (646 square feet). This establishment will also include a liquor store offering Lidl’s selection of wines, beers, ciders, spirits, and liqueurs.

Meeting Community Needs

Gordon Cruikshanks, Lidl Northern Ireland’s regional managing director, highlighted the significance of this new pub. He noted that Lidl has been part of the Dundonald community for over 20 years. Despite this, residents have not had access to the full product range until now. The town has seen a population increase exceeding 20% in recent years, increasing the demand for local public house options.

Legal Challenges and Approval

The construction of the pub followed the resolution of legal challenges that delayed its approval. A High Court ruling in January 2025 dismissed an appeal from a competing drinks trader. The trader argued against the suitability of Lidl’s proposed premises for a liquor license and claimed the pub wouldn’t generate enough business.

While acknowledging the innovative concept of a pub attached to a supermarket, the judge stated that existing licensing restrictions should not stifle development. Under Northern Ireland’s licensing laws, an establishment can transfer its license if it meets similar criteria, which facilitated Lidl’s licensing process.
