Amazon Luna Streamlines Service, Retains Only Core Subscription

Amazon Luna has announced a significant shift in its cloud gaming service, effective April 10, 2023. The platform will streamline its offerings, retaining only its core subscription model that resembles a Stadia Pro format.

Key Changes to Amazon Luna

Launched in 2020, Amazon Luna began as a cloud gaming service providing access to a diverse library of games through a single monthly fee. Over the years, the platform introduced various subscription channels and third-party libraries, including collaborations with Jackbox Games and Ubisoft.

Removal of Additional Features

The recent update details major cutbacks:

  • Elimination of the “Bring Your Own Library” feature
  • Discontinuation of individual game purchases
  • Removal of third-party subscription channels from platforms like Ubisoft and Jackbox Games

Any games previously purchased through Amazon Luna will remain accessible until June 10, 2026. However, players can no longer buy new games as of April 10, 2023.

Subscription Models

Amazon Luna will now offer two main subscription options:

  • Luna Standard: A monthly fee gives access to a rotating library of games, including party games and Fortnite.
  • Luna Premium: Available at $9.99/month, this option includes all Standard games plus additional premium titles such as Hogwarts: Legacy and LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga.

This drastic change leaves Amazon Luna with a more focused approach, concentrating on delivering a solid gaming experience through its Prime membership.

Future of Amazon Luna

Starting in 2026, Amazon Luna will cease to provide third-party game stores, individual purchases, and channel subscriptions. Players will have 90 days post-cutoff to save their data.

The company has emphasized listening to player feedback, indicating that future development will center around enhancing user experiences and expanding the game library for Prime members.

As Amazon Luna evolves, it aims to streamline its service while retaining the core elements that resonate with gamers. This restructuring positions the platform as a more unified service devoted to providing captivating gaming content.
