NLHS Revises Electronic Health System Rollout After Doctors Voice Concerns

Newfoundland and Labrador Health Services (NLHS) is revising its strategy concerning the rollout of the CorCare electronic health system. This decision comes after feedback from local physicians raised substantial concerns about the potential risks associated with the initial implementation plan.

Concerns Raised by Physicians

Hundreds of doctors in Newfoundland and Labrador previously voiced their objections, expressing anxiety over the 35-page agreement linked to the new health information system. They worried the simultaneous province-wide launch could result in complications, including missed or delayed testing, jeopardizing patient care.

Adjustments Made by NLHS

  • The system will no longer be mandatory for all physicians.
  • NLHS will allow continued use of existing paper requisition methods.
  • Liability clauses related to data breaches have been revised to better protect physicians.
  • Concerns about a temporary reduction in patient access have been acknowledged, with some services expected to decrease by up to 20% during the transition period.

Launch Date and Training Initiatives

The CorCare system is set to launch on April 25. In preparation, NLHS has invested time and resources into both upgrading IT infrastructure and training staff. Over 30,000 individual training sessions have occurred since February, with more than 13,000 personnel already trained on the new platform.

Support and Resources Available

Following the system’s launch, NLHS will establish command centers to provide 24/7 support for physicians for the first month. Dedicated phone lines and approximately 2,700 trained “super users” will be available to assist with onboarding and troubleshooting.

Patient Benefits of the New System

Despite the initial hurdles, the CorCare system promises significant advantages for patients. Users will have the ability to:

  • Access their complete medical records.
  • View test results promptly.
  • Book appointments efficiently across healthcare facilities.

Dr. Gena Bugden, VP of medical services, highlighted that this integrative approach will enhance coordination among healthcare providers and minimize unnecessary repeat testing. Moreover, the system will provide patients with the flexibility to seek quicker appointments based on regional availability.

A Vision for the Future

Ron Johnson, interim CEO of NLHS, emphasized that this overhaul marks a transformational change for healthcare in the province. The benefits of the CorCare system are expected to manifest over time, ultimately enhancing patient care and improving the overall healthcare experience in Newfoundland and Labrador.
