Jayson Tatum Returns to MSG Post-Achilles: ‘Get It Out the Way’
Jayson Tatum will return to Madison Square Garden on Thursday. He tore his Achilles there last May during the playoffs.
Tatum admitted he is not eager to step back into the arena. He confirmed plans to play in New York before the Celtics host the New Orleans Pelicans on Friday.
Tuesday night performance
On Tuesday, Tatum scored 23 points in a 113-102 win over the Charlotte Hornets. Boston trailed 87-80 late in the third quarter before pulling away.
The Celtics have won 13 of 15 games with Tatum in the lineup since his return. His presence has helped the team string together strong results heading into the postseason.
Return to Madison Square Garden
This trip marks his first game at the Knicks’ arena since the injury. Tatum said he wanted to face the challenge and “get it out the way.”
If the standings hold, Boston and New York could meet in a potential second-round playoff series. That possibility adds another layer to the return.
Post-Achilles recovery
Tatum has spoken openly about the emotional toll of his recovery. He called returning to MSG another mental step in the rehabilitation process.
He also noted physical limits. He is not playing both legs of back-to-backs as he rebuilds stamina.
Teammates’ support
Jaylen Brown said Tatum looks more explosive than in his early games. Brown praised his rebounding and ability to finish through contact.
Brown added that the roster will support Tatum mentally and physically. “We’ve got his back,” he said.
