Mayor Quinton Lucas Proposes Plan to Relocate Royals Downtown
Mayor Quinton Lucas is set to unveil a plan aimed at relocating the Kansas City Royals downtown. The proposal involves constructing a ballpark at Washington Square Park and will be presented to the City Council. This initiative comes after a previous ballpark vote for a Crossroads location was rejected by voters in 2024.
Details of the Proposal
The ordinance suggested by Mayor Lucas would mandate the city manager to negotiate a 30-year lease for the new ballpark. The goal is for the facility to open in 2030, a year prior to the expiration of the current lease at Kauffman Stadium.
- Total project cost: $1.9 billion
- City funding: $600 million
- Funding sources: Bonds, city appropriations, and Tax Increment Financing (TIF)
- Parks and Recreation approval: Proposal will next go to Board of Parks and Recreation Commissioners
Funding and Support
While the city is committed to providing a significant portion of the funding, additional financial contributions could come from the state of Missouri and Jackson County. However, specifics on the amount from these entities remain uncertain.
Importantly, the proposal does not require a public vote, marking a significant departure from previous attempts to secure support for a new stadium. The Royals have not yet publicly endorsed this new plan.
Location and Accessibility
The proposed ballpark site will be situated between Main Street and Grand Boulevard in Kansas City, just north of Pershing Road. This location offers several advantages.
- Minimized demolition of existing buildings
- Limited displacement of local businesses
- 19,000 parking spots within a 10-minute walk
Union Station lies to the west of the proposed site, while Crown Center is located to the south. This strategic position is designed to enhance accessibility and minimize disruption, addressing some of the criticisms directed at the earlier Crossroads site proposal.
