Hunter Biden Faces Financial Strain, Challenges Trump’s Sons to YouTuber Cage Match

A Washington civil suit has put fresh focus on the former first son’s finances. Winston & Strawn LLP sued Hunter Biden in June 2025 over unpaid legal fees tied to his federal tax and gun cases.

Dispute over legal bills

The firm claims breach of contract for unpaid work by attorney Abbe Lowell. As of March 2026, the parties remain unable to agree on the total owed.

Hunter Biden’s new lawyer, Barry Coburn, told D.C. Superior Court the client is “impecunious.” A discovery deadline was set for April 9 to resolve document production.

Court filings and claims

Coburn said his team has not engaged billing consultants or e-discovery vendors. He added the client cannot afford those services and struggles to pay current counsel.

The firm has asked the judge to order emails and records that show what portion of the bills remains unpaid.

Broader financial picture

Biden previously estimated legal costs across his cases reached as much as $15 million. He was also once delinquent on up to $6.5 million owed to former lawyer Kevin Morris.

Morris, who represented creators of South Park, testified to House committees in January 2024 about repayment options. Republican investigators reported nearly $30 million flowed into Biden family accounts from some of Hunter’s foreign ventures.

Assets, sales and recent claims

Court papers from March 2025 show modest recent art sales. He reported one abstract work sold for $36,000 since December 2023.

The filings also note memoir sales fell from 3,200 to 1,100 copies across two six-month spans. He said a $3 million Malibu rental became “unlivable” after the Palisades Fire, although photos suggested mixed damage nearby.

Residency and public activity

Coburn stated Biden now “lives abroad” and struggles to pay lawyers. He and his wife, Melissa Cohen Biden, were spotted with a Secret Service detail in Cape Town in March and May 2025.

Public appearances have continued despite the financial strain. It remains unclear whether he received payment for podcast and other media spots.

Tour and dare

Days after the D.C. filing, Hunter announced a multi-city American southwest tour with YouTuber Andrew Callaghan. He said Callaghan invited him on the Channel 5 Carnival Tour.

He publicly challenged President Trump’s sons to a proposed YouTuber cage match and said he would participate if organizers pull it off. Tour stops include Phoenix, San Diego, and Albuquerque, though compensation details remain unclear.

Responses

Barry Coburn declined to comment beyond court filings. Winston & Strawn and Abbe Lowell did not respond to requests for comment.
