North Dakota Battles Wisconsin: Live Updates from Men’s Frozen Four
Las Vegas hosts the final weekend of the 2026 Division I men’s hockey season at T-Mobile Arena. Four teams remain: Denver, North Dakota, Michigan and Wisconsin.
The field’s pedigree
The quartet holds 33 national titles combined. Denver leads with ten championships, followed by Michigan’s nine.
North Dakota has eight and Wisconsin six. All four programs bring deep tournament history.
Denver’s form
Denver entered the tournament with a 27-11-3 record. David Carle’s team won titles in 2017, 2022 and 2024.
They shut out Cornell and beat defending champion Western Michigan. Freshman Johnny Hicks is 14-0-1 since becoming starter.
He allowed 20 goals in 15 games after taking over. The Pioneers arrive riding playoff momentum.
North Dakota’s path
The Fighting Hawks last won a title in 2016. That team featured the CBS line of Drake Caggiula, Brock Boeser and Nick Schmaltz.
This season mixes veteran experience with impactful freshmen. North Dakota has outscored tournament opponents 8-0 in two games.
Goaltender Jan Špunar anchors their defensive effort. The Hawks look to keep that stingy form in Vegas.
Wisconsin’s unlikely run
The Badgers finished outside the NPI top five. They nearly missed selection due to bid stealers from other conferences.
Wisconsin beat Dartmouth 5-1 to advance. They also rallied in the third period against Michigan State.
The program chases a seventh national championship. The Badgers arrive as a dark-horse contender.
Michigan’s perspective
Michigan has nine championships but last won in 1998. Marty Turco was the Wolverines’ goaltender that year.
Current netminder Jack Ivankovic draws comparisons to Turco. Fans hope he can end the long drought.
