Dewhurst Winner Gewan Tragically Dies in Racecourse Accident

Gewan was fatally injured during a gallop at Kempton on Thursday morning. He had been the champion two-year-old and won last year’s G1 Dewhurst Stakes.

Trained by Andrew Balding, Gewan raced for Forz Europe Ltd, owned by Harrison Li. He had been named champion two-year-old of 2025 and was a leading contender for next month’s 2,000 Guineas.

Incident at Kempton

The accident occurred during a routine racecourse gallop at Kempton. Vets attended the scene immediately but could not save the colt.

Jockey James Doyle was aboard at the time and walked away uninjured. His tragic death followed a racecourse accident that shocked connections.

Racing record and breeding

Gewan won three of his four starts as a juvenile. His victories included the G3 Acomb Stakes at York and the G1 Dewhurst.

He was by Night Of Thunder out of Grey Mystere, a Lethal Force mare. The colt was bred by Simon Sweeting and Charlie Wyatt under Overbury Stallions and Dukes Stud.

Connections’ response

Park House Stables confirmed the loss in a social media post. They expressed deep sadness and sent thoughts to owner Harrison Li, jockey James Doyle, and groom Marie Perrault.

Perrault had looked after Gewan since his arrival at Kingsclere and rode him daily. Trainer Andrew Balding and the team acknowledged the immediate efforts of on-site veterinary staff.
