Tom Kerridge Describes Jamie Oliver in One Word, Reveals Chef ‘Rivalry’

Tom Kerridge has discussed how relationships among Britain’s top chefs have shifted over time. He reflected on his ties with Jamie Oliver, Gordon Ramsay and Marco Pierre White.

Comments made on a podcast

Kerridge appeared on the Red Talks podcast with host Red Richardson. During the discussion, Red recalled a story involving Jamie Oliver and Marco Pierre White.

Red said Jamie felt insulted after comments allegedly made by Marco. Filmogaz.com covered that exchange during the podcast recap.

One-word description and rivalry

Tom Kerridge described Jamie Oliver in one word, calling him “magic”. He praised Jamie’s energy and ability to connect with people.

He also revealed chef rivalry has cooled. Kerridge said what once felt competitive now mostly feels like friendship among his generation.

How relationships have evolved

Kerridge said the industry shares more now. Many chefs openly discuss the same challenges.

He noted younger cooks, around 35, are pushing standards. Some are cooking at two-Michelin-star levels and remain competitive.

Meanwhile, Kerridge and his contemporaries are roughly 15 years beyond that stage. He said they are largely friends today.

Pressure on the hospitality sector

Restaurants face mounting pressures from rising energy costs driven by conflict in Iran. This adds to strains from recent global events.

Kerridge pointed to the cumulative impact of four years since the Ukraine war. He also referenced six years since Covid-19 lockdowns.

Many venues struggle to cover basic costs, let alone make a profit. Kerridge highlighted these financial realities during his interview.

On vocation and responsibility

Speaking to the press, Kerridge said hospitality is about vocation, not just money. He stressed a duty to continue working despite thin margins.

He praised the trade for its community of talented people. That sense of responsibility, he added, keeps many chefs going.

Television role

Kerridge serves as a judge on Great British Menu. The show returned on Thursday, 9 April at 6pm on BBC Two.
