Husband Arrested After Woman Falls Overboard and Goes Missing in Bahamas
Authorities in the Bahamas arrested a husband following the disappearance of his wife, who reportedly fell overboard from their dinghy. The Royal Bahamas Police Force confirmed the arrest of a 59-year-old man on Wednesday in Abaco. Although his identity was not disclosed, the arrest relates to the case of Lynette Hooker, who went missing on April 4 while traveling to Elbow Cay.
Incident Details
Lynette Hooker, aged 55, was aboard an 8-foot hard-bottom dinghy with her husband, Brian Hooker. The couple left Hope Town around 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. During the trip, Lynette fell overboard, taking the boat keys with her, which shut off the engine.
Brian Hooker stated that strong currents swept Lynette away before he was able to paddle to shore. He expressed his heartbreak over the incident in a Facebook post, describing the challenging weather conditions at the time.
Ongoing Investigation
The U.S. Coast Guard has initiated a criminal investigation regarding the matter. Brian Hooker reported the incident to authorities at the Marsh Harbour Boat Yard at approximately 4 p.m. on Sunday.
Hooker’s daughter, Karli Aylesworth, has called for an extensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding her mother’s disappearance. She expressed concerns about “prior issues” that warrant scrutiny.
Federal and Local Assistance
The U.S. State Department is cooperating with Bahamian authorities to provide assistance in the ongoing investigation. Aylesworth requested not only local oversight but also federal involvement to ensure a comprehensive review.
The Bahamas currently holds a Level 2 travel advisory, urging visitors to exercise increased caution. The advisory highlights that boating regulations in the area are weak, leading to injuries and fatalities.
Social Media Post
The last communication shared on the couple’s Instagram account, “The Sailing Hookers,” indicated difficulty with their vessel. A post from April 3 featured a boat stuck in the water, captioned, “Not going anywhere for a while?!”
The family’s focus remains on search efforts, and they continue to hope for Lynette’s safe return.
