YouTube Shorts Harnesses AI for Personalized Avatars Matching Your Voice and Appearance
YouTube has launched an innovative feature allowing users to create personalized AI avatars for use in Shorts. This capability, introduced in the main YouTube app and YouTube Create, was previously teased earlier this year.
YouTube Shorts and AI Avatars
The new avatar creation process requires users to capture a “live selfie.” This involves recording both their face and voice by reading several prompts. The result is a photorealistic avatar that matches users’ appearance and voice.
Key Features of AI Avatar Creation
- Selfie Capture: Users record their face and voice.
- Session Length: Each recording can be up to 8 seconds long, with the option to create multiple clips.
- Single Setup: The initial setup is required only once, but users can retake the selfie anytime to update their avatar.
- Safe Avatar Usage: The created avatar cannot be used by others for original Shorts.
- Deletion Policy: Users can delete their avatar at any time, with automatic deletion by YouTube after three years of inactivity.
Safety and Authenticity
YouTube emphasizes safety in avatar creation. The selfie video and voice will only contribute to creating the avatar, preventing misuse. All videos featuring avatars will display watermarks and digital labels such as SynthID and C2PA, along with clear disclosures about AI-generated content.
How to Create an AI Avatar
To create an avatar in YouTube Shorts, users need to follow these steps:
- Open the Create ‘+'” in the YouTube app.
- Tap the Gemini spark icon in the corner.
- Select “Create video” and choose “Make a video with my avatar.”
- Alternatively, access it through the Remix menu: Reimagine > Add me to this scene.
Availability and Requirements
This feature is rolling out globally to users aged 18 and older, excluding Europe. Full availability is expected within the coming days. To create an avatar, users must have an existing YouTube channel.
With the introduction of personalized AI avatars, YouTube Shorts is enhancing user engagement and creativity in video content. This advancement marks a significant step in merging technology with personal expression on the platform.
