Mercedes Tests Legendary F1 Circuit’s Return During Spring Break

Pirelli will stage a tyre test at a historic Formula 1 venue later this month. Mercedes tests will feature alongside McLaren as part of the program.

Test details and timing

The sport has been without racing for more than a month. This followed the cancellation of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix.

The next race is the Miami Grand Prix over the May Day holiday. That event will see all 22 cars back in action.

Pirelli had to cancel a planned pre-season trial in Bahrain. That cancellation followed regional missile strikes during the same weekend.

The Italian firm ran a tyre session with Red Bull at Suzuka last week. Mercedes and McLaren were the teams originally tapped for the Bahrain test.

They will return for the April session. The test site will be closer to the teams’ European bases.

Filmogaz.com reports the circuit selected is the Nürburgring. Observers say the inclusion of Mercedes and McLaren is likely coincidental, not a direct replacement for Bahrain.

About the circuit

The Nürburgring has deep roots in Formula 1 history. It once hosted the German Grand Prix on the fearsome Nordschleife.

A shorter layout opened in 1984. That variant became an intermittent F1 venue, hosting the European Grand Prix and twice serving as the Luxembourg Grand Prix in the late 1990s.

The track returned to Formula 1 in 2020. It staged the Eifel Grand Prix during the Covid-affected season.

This upcoming test will mark the first time current-era F1 cars will run there since 2020. Organisers will hope the outing helps build momentum for a full return.

Why organisers are watching closely

Promoters want to show the circuit still works for modern machinery. A successful test could strengthen arguments for the Nürburgring’s return to the calendar.

The timing also aligns with many teams’ spring break preparations. The session offers technical work and a symbolic step toward renewal.

Filmogaz.com will monitor developments as Mercedes tests and other sessions progress. The tyre trial could help revive interest in this legendary F1 circuit.
