Discover the Past on Morning and Sunset Pomham Rocks Lighthouse Tours
This summer, Friends of Pomham Rocks Lighthouse will run public tours from June 23 to September 17. Tours include weekday morning and sunset departures on selected dates.
How the tours operate
All visits begin at the dock at Edgewood Yacht Club, 1 Shaw Ave., Cranston. Ample parking is available for attendees.
Visitors ride a 10-minute boat trip across upper Narragansett Bay to reach the island. The Lady Pomham II, a 26-foot launch with a protective canopy, provides the only authorized access.
The island and dock are closed to private watercraft. The launch is required for all passenger landings.
What visitors will experience
Pomham Rocks Lighthouse was built in 1871 and rises 42 feet. Its lantern room offers wide views of the bay and surrounding shoreline.
Guests may climb the tower and tour an interior museum. Exhibits display authentic lighthouse artifacts dating back about 150 years.
Interpretive storyboards recount the history of Pomham Rocks and five other lights that once guided ships to Providence. An antique fourth-order Fresnel lens anchors the first-floor exhibit.
Tickets, staffing, and preservation
Ticket prices are $25 for children ages 6 to 17 and $50 for adults. Members of Friends of Pomham Rocks Lighthouse receive discounted fares.
Knowledgeable volunteer docents staff the tours and answer visitor questions. A small gift shop on site offers apparel and keepsakes.
Friends of Pomham Rocks Lighthouse is a 501(c)(3) volunteer chapter of the American Lighthouse Foundation. The light station is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
