BC Ferries Fare Increase Announced: Here’s the Effective Date

BC Ferries is set to implement fare increases across its routes, coinciding with the peak travel season. Effective Thursday, April 8, 2026, the fare adjustments conform to a 3.2 percent annual increase that began in 2024. Unlike a uniform increase, specific fare categories will be adjusted to align with the guidelines established by the independent BC Ferries Commissioner in 2023.

Details of the Fare Increases

The targeted fare changes aim to optimize vessel capacity and promote off-peak travel. Brian Anderson, vice-president of Strategy & Planning at BC Ferries, stated, “Demand for ferry travel continues to grow, and we have set new records for the last two summers.” Operating costs for the extensive ferry network, including maintaining an aging fleet, have prompted this fare restructuring.

New Fare Rates

The following fare changes will take effect on April 8, 2026:

  • Major Routes (Metro Vancouver to Vancouver Island):
    • Standard vehicle + adult fare (drive-up or prepaid): $110
    • Adult foot passenger: $21 (increase of $1)
    • Child foot passenger: $10.50 (increase of $0.50)
    • Saver fares remain unchanged at $15 for adults and $7.50 for children
  • Minor and Northern Routes:
    • Fare increases for standard vehicles: $0.95 to $2.05
    • Fare increases for adult passengers: $0.40 to $0.60

Introduction of Saver Fares

A major feature of the 2026 fare changes is the expansion of Saver fares, discounted rates available primarily during off-peak times. More than 30 percent of the bookable space on these sailings will now be available for Saver fares, with over 200,000 new options added.

Enhanced Customer Support Tools

Additionally, BC Ferries has introduced new tools to help passengers manage busy or sold-out sailings. Expanded email alerts will support popular routes such as Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay and Tsawwassen to Duke Point. A waitlist pilot has also been launched on the Powell River to Comox route.

Future Fare Projections

Looking ahead, BC Ferries customers can expect no significant fare increases until March 2028. However, potential increases could occur in April 2028, with estimates suggesting a possible 30 percent rise to manage operational costs. The final approval for any fare changes remains under the jurisdiction of the independent BC Ferries Commissioner.
