Gemini Overlay and Live Unveil Major Android Redesign
Google is embarking on a significant redesign of the Gemini Overlay and Gemini Live, following updates made in February and March. This rapid succession of visual changes marks a new phase in the development of their Android interface.
Overview of the Gemini Overlay Redesign
Last month, Google introduced a revamped Gemini Overlay on Android, featuring a comprehensive Tools menu. The new design merges the attachment and Tools menus into a single interface. Key features include:
- A slightly narrower pill design.
- An enlarged “Ask Gemini” button.
- An updated microphone icon with an outline style.
Users can access a bottom sheet by tapping the ‘plus’ icon. This bottom sheet presents a carousel that showcases options such as Photos, Camera, Files, Drive, and Notebooks, utilizing large, rounded squares. Additional features include:
- Create Image
- Create Video
- Create Music
- Canvas
- Deep Research
- Guided Learning
- Personal Intelligence (toggle)
Google has reportedly been testing this combined design on the web, indicating enhancements will also eventually appear in the full mobile app.
Enhancements to Gemini Live
Alongside the Overlay, Gemini Live is undergoing a major redesign. The new Live interface is now accessible outside the full application, notably different from the previous version.
Features of the updated Gemini Live include:
- A new floating interface instead of a pill design that dominated the screen.
- A centrally positioned waveform flanked by screen sharing and an exit keyboard.
- A captions button located at the top-right corner.
The Live overlay is designed to condense into a smaller circle as users navigate their devices. Additionally, this redesigned format will reflect in the full Gemini app during Live sessions, replacing the traditional fullscreen interface with the overlay. The standard home screen will now be visible underneath.
Availability and Updates
These updates are part of the Google app beta version 17.3, which users can check for currently. If the update is not yet available, users can force stop the app from App info to try and access the latest design. However, this redesign has not yet been rolled out to the stable channel.
