Canal District Owner Challenges Agawa Canyon Train Station Relocation Plan

Canal District Owner Challenges Agawa Canyon Train Station Relocation Plan

The owner of the Canal District has expressed strong opposition to the relocation of the Agawa Canyon Tour Train. The train’s departure point is set to move from its current station to a more minimalistic rail yard location on Carmen’s Way. Tony Porco, who owns the Canal District properties, including the existing station, conveyed his disappointment regarding this decision.

Details of the Relocation Plan

Recently, Watco announced this change as part of a new strategy. The rail yard, located near Algoma Steel, offers limited amenities for passengers compared to the current station. Porco remarked, “Bottom line is, we don’t want them to move, but what are you going to do?” This statement highlights the challenges faced by the Canal District.

Watco’s Justification for the Move

  • Watco aims to make the tour train operation more efficient.
  • The new site will provide convenient parking and easy access to highways.
  • This change is intended to streamline boarding and staging procedures.

Tracie VanBecelaere, a Watco spokesperson, emphasized that the relocation supports a seamless experience for passengers. She noted that the relocation will allow guests to enjoy additional time at Agawa Canyon Park. Moreover, Watco is committed to ensuring accessibility, safety, and customer comfort throughout the process.

Background Information

Watco acquired the Agawa Canyon Tour Train in 2021, along with a significant section of the Algoma Central Railway line. That same year, the provincial government allocated $5 million for improvements at the Canal District, including the new train station. The project was a collaborative effort with the Sault Ste. Marie Economic Development Corporation and Tony Porco, who also owns The Machine Shop and SIS Group, a manufacturing firm.

The Agawa Canyon Tour Train became the official operator from the Canal District in the fall of 2021, transitioning from its previous location outside Station Mall. Ticket sales for the upcoming season commenced on April 3, with operations scheduled from early August through mid-October. The relocation raises questions about future developments and passenger experience as plans move forward.
