Jamie Smith produced a match-defining 132 to help Surrey secure a draw at Edgbaston. He had struggled on the Ashes tour, averaging 23.44 across five Tests in Australia.

Surrey began day four still 47 runs behind and three wickets down. Warwickshire had posted a commanding 544 in their first innings.

Smith combined with Dan Lawrence to turn the game. Lawrence compiled 161, and the pair put on 217 for the fourth wicket.

Surrey declared their second innings on 447-4. The partnership ensured the match ended in a stalemate.

Somerset v Nottinghamshire

Somerset and Nottinghamshire finished level at Taunton. James Rew added only 14 to an overnight 108 not out to reach 122.

Tom Kohler-Cadmore also reached three figures with 104. Somerset declared on 407-5 and set 417 to win.

Nottinghamshire reached 140-3 from 45 overs. Ben Slater top-scored with 60 and the match concluded as a draw.

Glamorgan v Yorkshire

Glamorgan and Yorkshire drew in Cardiff after a tense final session. Glamorgan had declared on 218-5 earlier.

Colin Ingram followed a first-innings century with a second-innings 75. Leg-spinner Mason Crane took three wickets.

Yorkshire were reduced to 139-3 at one stage. Adam Lyth made a fighting 97 but fell three short of a century.

Sussex v Leicestershire

Sussex secured the only convincing win among the early top-tier fixtures. They beat Leicestershire by 222 runs on the road.

The hosts resumed 125-5 but were bowled out for 258. Stephen Eskinazi (54) and Ben Cox (60) added a century stand.

Young seamer Henry Crocombe finished with 4-36. His match figures read 9-69, and Sussex recovered from a 12-point deduction.

Middlesex v Gloucestershire

Middlesex registered a win at Lord’s. They beat Gloucestershire by an innings and 14 runs.

Gloucestershire were bundled out for 215 after following on. Ryan Higgins claimed 3-18 to finish the job.

Lancashire, Northamptonshire and others

James Anderson missed victory by one wicket in his first match as Lancashire captain. He took eight wickets in the match.

Northamptonshire appeared beaten but held on. George Bartlett’s four-and-a-half-hour 95 not out rescued his side.

Durham could not force a result against Kent. Storm Dave had washed out the third day’s play at Chester-le-Street.

Kent declared on 218-9 with a 356-run lead. Zak Crawley was lbw to Matthew Potts for 20, the second such dismissal.

Tawanda Muyeye remained unbeaten on 109 as Kent reached 254-5 from 57 overs. The match finished with Kent five wickets short.

Worcestershire also drew at Derbyshire, closing on 314-7 after being forced to follow on. Shoaib Bashir bowled 27 overs.
