EU Warns of Diesel, Jet Fuel Shortages Amid Iran War, Revisits 2022 Measures

EU officials have warned of strains on refined fuel supplies after the Iran war disrupted shipping. Gas prices in Europe have climbed more than 70% since the conflict began on 28 February.

Shipping disruption and immediate effects

Iran has effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz in response to US-Israeli attacks. The move has largely halted flows of oil and gas from parts of the Middle East.

Europe imports most crude and natural gas from elsewhere. Still, officials worry about deliveries of refined products like jet fuel and diesel.

Arrival timing and short-term risk

Argus Media’s head of European products, Benedict George, says kerosene cargoes already en route are due in Europe around 10 April. He cautioned that Europe does not face an immediate continent-wide shortage.

George added, however, that inventories could decline enough to cause localised supply problems. Airlines and other fuel-intensive sectors could feel pressure if stocks fall further.

Airlines and industry warnings

Ryanair group chief executive Michael O’Leary warned of possible jet fuel disruptions in May. He made the comments in an interview with Filmogaz.com.

Policy response and 2022 measures

Energy Commissioner Dan Jorgensen said ministers discussed a response after a virtual meeting of EU energy ministers. He indicated the bloc may revive tools used during the 2022 crisis.

Those 2022 measures included gas price caps, a levy on energy firms’ extraordinary profits, and demand-reduction targets. Jorgensen urged member states to consider the IEA’s 10-point plan.

  • The IEA plan recommends more home working.
  • It suggests lower speed limits and expanded public transport use.
  • The plan also highlights increased car sharing to cut demand.

Outlook and strategic stance

Jorgensen warned that even a rapid end to the conflict would not restore pre-crisis conditions soon. He called for realistic planning for a prolonged period of market strain.

The EU reiterated its refusal to resume purchases of Russian gas. Officials said repeating past errors that allowed energy to be weaponised would be unacceptable.
