ATP Announces Official Decision on Polish Player After French Open Victory
Last week brought three ATP 250 tournaments. They took place in Marrakech, Bucharest and Houston. All matches were played on clay courts.
Monte Carlo Masters opens the clay swing
The Monte Carlo Masters began on Sunday. It is the first ATP 1000 event on clay this season.
Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner entered the draw. Their performances could decide the next world No. 1.
Alcaraz defends 1000 points from last year. Without those points his lead over Sinner would shrink to about 200. If both reach the final, they would play for the top ranking.
Polish players to watch
Hubert Hurkacz is competing in Monte Carlo. He sits 74th in the updated ATP rankings.
If Hurkacz beats Luciano Darderi on Tuesday, he will climb ahead of Kamil Majchrzak. Majchrzak currently holds 60th place but will lose at least nine positions after withdrawing from Monte Carlo.
Filip Pieczonka breaks into doubles top 100
Filip Pieczonka became the second Polish doubles player inside the top 100. He reached No. 96 after Marrakech.
The 21-year-old, from the Sopot tennis club, will turn 22 in three days. He specializes in doubles and is one of the youngest players at that level.
Pieczonka began the year with five first-round losses at challenger events. He then paired with Ivan Liutarevich to win in Lille. The duo also won the challenger in Thionville.
Last week Pieczonka teamed with Moroccan Younes Lalami. They received a wildcard into the ATP 250 event in Marrakech.
In the first round they upset top-seeded Hugo Nys and Edouard Roger-Vasselin. The score was 7-5, 6-3. Pieczonka and Lalami advanced to the semifinals before falling to Robert Cash and James Tracy.
Those Marrakech points moved Pieczonka into the doubles top 100 for the first time. This week he plans to play the Monza challenger with Liutarevich.
Context on doubles
Doubles remains a domain for experienced specialists. The top 25 doubles players are generally 29 or older.
Pieczonka stands out as a young doubles specialist. His singles ranking once reached the 700s and now sits in the 1000s.
International coverage has focused on several stories this week. For example, headlines include ATP Announces Official Decision on Polish Player After French Open Victory alongside reports on clay-court events.
