CBS Taps Byron Allen as New ‘Late Show’ Host
CBS is set to launch a new late-night programming era featuring Byron Allen as host. This transition will take place immediately after the conclusion of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. Beginning on May 22, CBS will air Comics Unleashed with Byron Allen at 11:35 p.m., followed by his game show, Funny You Should Ask, at 12:35 a.m. The final episode of The Late Show is scheduled for May 21.
CBS’s New Late-Night Programming Schedule
In a strategic shift, CBS aims to profit from late-night television with Allen Media Group producing these shows. Allen is purchasing airtime from CBS, which allows for selling advertising spots in these two hours. This model is expected to benefit both CBS’s bottom line and Allen’s business.
Byron Allen’s Vision
Byron Allen, the founder, chairman, and CEO of Allen Media Group, shared his passion for comedy. “I created and launched Comics Unleashed 20 years ago so my fellow comedians could have a platform to do what we all love — make people laugh,” he stated. His excitement for CBS’s decision showcases the network’s confidence in his vision for a two-hour comedy block.
Show Formats
- Comics Unleashed: A hybrid of talk show and stand-up, featuring comedians performing short sets based on topics suggested by Allen.
- Funny You Should Ask: A comedy game show hosted by Jon Kelley, where contestants answer trivia questions with assistance from a panel of comedians.
Executive Production Team
Both shows boast a talented group of executive producers:
- Byron Allen
- Carolyn Folks
- Jennifer Lucas
- Jodi Miller
- Peter Steen
Dylan King also serves as an executive producer for Comics Unleashed, while Bob Boden, Scott Satin, and Eric Charbonnel oversee Funny You Should Ask.
Anticipation for Change
Allen has long expressed interest in late-night television, stating, “Let me be clear … if they are looking for a show, my hand is already up.” He highlighted a commitment to comedy that he has nurtured for decades.
This programming shift marks an exciting evolution for CBS’s late-night landscape, promising an engaging mix of humor and interactive entertainment.
