Tennessee Forward JP Estrella to Enter Basketball Transfer Portal

Tennessee forward J.P. Estrella announced on April 6 via Instagram that he will enter the transfer portal. He said the choice came after significant reflection and family discussions.

Statement from Estrella

Estrella thanked coaches, teammates and Vol Nation for their support. He said his time with Tennessee left him with lasting relationships and memories.

He described the decision as difficult but expressed optimism about the next chapter. The post conveyed gratitude and hope for future opportunities.

Season and college career

The 6-foot-11 forward averaged 10 points and 5.4 rebounds this season. He shot 59.6 percent from the field.

Estrella battled injuries earlier in the year. He became a regular starter late in the regular season and during the SEC and NCAA tournaments.

The redshirt sophomore spent three seasons with the Volunteers. He played 25 games as a freshman and missed the 2024-25 season due to a foot injury.

Transfer portal timing and teammates

Estrella and two teammates announced plans before the portal officially opened on April 7. Guard Cade Phillips and forward Clarence Massamba also stated they plan to enter the transfer portal.

Programs will now evaluate Tennessee’s roster movement as recruiting ramps up. The portal entry marks the start of a new search for Estrella.

Outlook

Estrella’s size and efficiency should draw interest from multiple programs. He arrives on the market as a proven interior scorer and rim presence.
