Remote Area Medical: A Lifeline for Many
Founded in 1985, RAM initially focused on providing healthcare in remote areas, including parts of South America. By the 1990s, the organization shifted its attention to underserved Americans who lack access to care due to high costs. Recently, RAM set up a free clinic in Knoxville, Tennessee, attracting patients from far and wide.
Long Waits, but Hope Remains
On a chilly February morning, individuals began arriving at the clinic days in advance. They camped out in parking lots, hoping for much-needed services. Among them was Sandra Tallent, who traveled over 200 miles from Huntsville, Alabama.

Both patients expressed gratitude for RAM’s existence, acknowledging they would have no other options without its help. Burge described the clinic as “life-changing,” revealing the deep impact these services have on individuals’ lives.

RAM clinics typically provide a variety of services, emphasizing dental and vision care. The majority of patients—approximately 65%—seek dental aid while 30% look for eye exams.

Chris Hall, the current CEO of RAM, emphasizes the overwhelming generosity of donors and volunteers who contribute to the clinics. He noted that about 81% of the organization’s funding comes from individual supporters. Many healthcare professionals travel from across the country to volunteer their time and skills.
The clinics function without the need for patients to provide insurance or even their real names, ensuring no one is turned away. RAM aims to make these crucial services as accessible as possible.
Impact on Patients’ Lives
At the Knoxville clinic, over 500 patients received eye care, while nearly 700 were relieved of dental pain. This effort also restored smiles for 24 individuals, illustrating the significant difference RAM makes in many lives.
