CNN Hosts California Gubernatorial Primary Debate on May 5
CNN is set to host a gubernatorial primary debate in California on May 5. This event is crucial amid rising concerns among Democrats about the potential for a Republican gain in what is typically a solidly blue state.
California Gubernatorial Primary Debate Details
The debate will last for two hours and begin at 6 p.m. Pacific Time (9 p.m. Eastern Time). It will take place in the Los Angeles area, just weeks before the primary election scheduled for June 2.
Moderators and Candidate Eligibility
CNN anchors Elex Michaelson and Kaitlan Collins will moderate the debate. To qualify, candidates must meet specific polling and fundraising criteria:
- At least 3% support from likely primary voters in two reputable polls.
- Or an average of 3% support in two different polls that adhere to CNN’s reporting standards.
- Public release of qualifying polls must occur between February 1 and April 27.
- Candidates must have raised a minimum of $1 million for their campaign.
As of now, six Democrats and two Republicans have qualified for this debate, including:
- Democrats:
- Xavier Becerra, former secretary of health and human services
- Matt Mahan, mayor of San José
- Katie Porter, former representative
- Tom Steyer, former presidential candidate
- Eric Swalwell, US Representative
- Antonio Villaraigosa, former Los Angeles mayor
- Republicans:
- Chad Bianco, Riverside County sheriff
- Steve Hilton, former Fox News host
Concerns for Democrats
Democrats face mounting anxiety about the crowded field of candidates. California’s nonpartisan primary system allows the top two candidates—irrespective of party affiliation—to advance. With multiple Democrats in the race, there is a risk of splitting the vote.
This scenario could enable Bianco or Hilton to secure a spot on the general election ballot. Such an outcome would be significant in a state that opposed Donald Trump by over 20 percentage points in 2024.
Furthermore, this dynamic could hinder California Governor Gavin Newsom’s aspirations as he contemplates a 2028 presidential run. Recently, Trump endorsed Hilton, potentially intensifying the stakes for the gubernatorial race.
