Chetumal Police Dog Max Sniffs Out Major Pot Shipment; Belize National Detained
Authorities in Chetumal say their canine unit located a large consignment of marijuana on Friday. The alert came after officers watched a man lift boxes into a pickup truck.
The stop and canine alert
Patrol officers noticed two parked vehicles and a man carrying a wrapped package. The man used both hands to lift the parcel into the truck bed.
Police dog Max accompanied his handler during the approach. Max alerted to the presence of narcotics at the black pickup.
Inspection and location
The search took place on Bahía Boulevard in the Zona de Granjas neighborhood. Officers inspected the wrapped packages at that site.
Items recovered
- Four large packages wrapped in transparent and black nylon.
- Eight small clear nylon bags holding a dried green herb.
- A black fanny pack and a mobile phone.
Measurements and vehicles
Authorities describe the large packages as roughly 70 by 50 by 50 centimeters. The plant material inside resembled marijuana.
Two vehicles were seized. They included a black Dodge Durango with Quintana Roo plates.
The other was a silver Toyota 4Runner bearing Belize license plates. Both vehicles were taken into custody by police.
Suspect and charges
Police identified the detained man as Luis Alberto “N”, a Belizean national. He was arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking.
Investigators allege he possessed the four large boxes of marijuana. Authorities continue formal processing and investigation.
