Among them is Dave Burge, who recently participated in a RAM pop-up clinic. Burge, unable to afford dentures, faced a challenging journey, sleeping in his truck overnight in freezing temperatures for his dental appointment.

Dave Burge is not alone in his struggle. The RAM clinic served over 1,200 patients, some having waited days for services. Many attendees are uninsured or underinsured, necessitating this essential support. RAM provides medical, dental, and vision care to those in need across the United States.
The Importance of Dental Care
For Burge, his dental situation had become dire after accumulating nearly $140,000 in medical bills due to a severe car accident caused by an uninsured driver in 2012. Following that incident, a construction accident affected his teeth further, leaving him with limited options for treatment.
Sandra Tallent, who traveled over 200 miles from Alabama, shared a similar story. She also slept in her car for two nights waiting for dental assistance. “Without RAM, I wouldn’t be able to afford dentures,” she remarked.
The Broader Healthcare Landscape
Healthcare costs remain a burden for many Americans. A recent Gallup poll found that approximately one-third of Americans have delayed medical care due to high expenses. At RAM clinics, about half of the patients lack insurance altogether, while others struggle with unaffordable deductibles and co-pays.
According to RAM’s CEO, Chris Hall, 60% of the patients seeking assistance require dental care. The remaining patients typically request eye exams and general medical services.
Dedicated Volunteers Make a Difference
RAM relies on a team of dedicated volunteers to support its operations. The Knoxville clinic featured 887 volunteers over the weekend, encompassing medical professionals and community members. Many of the medical staff pay their own travel expenses to serve at these clinics.
Dr. Glen Goldstein, a New Jersey dentist, discovered RAM through a televised report. His involvement has since become a family tradition, where he witnesses the robust need for healthcare assistance. He often encounters individuals who are in desperate need of dental care, a situation that he finds heartbreaking.
The Impact of RAM Clinics
Financially, RAM operates clinics that cost between $100,000 and $500,000 to run, depending on size and location. The charity primarily relies on donations, with over 81% coming from individual contributions. Supplies and clinic spaces are often donated, enhancing their ability to provide crucial services.
Since its inception, RAM has treated over one million patients, thanks in part to the generosity of more than 250,000 volunteers. Last weekend in Knoxville, RAM provided medical care valued over one million dollars without charging patients. Services included:
- 1,224 patients treated
- 588 pairs of glasses made
- 1,467 teeth pulled
- 283 cavities filled
- 342 dental cleanings
- 247 medical exams
New technologies were on display at the clinic, including a dedicated trailer with 3D printers for creating dentures. Engineer Connor Gibson slept in the trailer to ensure the printers operated continuously. He described a transformative moment for patients as they see their new smiles for the first time. “You see the stress melt away, and it’s incredibly emotional,” he said.
For people like Burge and Tallent, their experiences at RAM were life-changing. “I don’t know what I’d do without RAM,” Tallent expressed. “I believe the Lord made a way through RAM.”
