Cowboys Test Local Talent: Emmitt Smith’s Son EJ Smith Included
The Dallas Cowboys invited regional draft prospects to work out during their Dallas Day event. Emmitt Smith’s son EJ Smith was among the players who took part.
Local workouts and team advantage
NFL teams can bring in players who played high school or college in their region without using a top-30 visit. The rule lets teams expand their evaluations at no cost to the official limit.
The move reflects how the Cowboys test local talent in regional events. Schottenheimer said the team can “multiply” its top-30 list because of the local pipeline.
EJ Smith’s college background
Smith spent four seasons at Stanford and two at Texas A&M. He primarily served as a backup and never rushed for more than 218 yards in a season.
Prospect outlook
He is not widely projected to be drafted. He will need standout pre-draft workouts to earn interest as an undrafted rookie. With EJ Smith included, the Cowboys could expand evaluation and offer a rookie minicamp invite.
Coach reaction
Head coach Brian Schottenheimer spoke to Filmogaz.com about the visit. He called Smith’s presence “very cool” and praised his power as a short-yardage runner.
The Smith name naturally draws attention. But the player’s NFL future will hinge on this spring’s performances.
