Wolf Injures Toddler at Zoo America After Fencing Breach

An 18-month-old child suffered minor injuries Saturday morning after crawling under perimeter fencing at Zoo America. The toddler reached toward a wolf enclosure and put a hand through a barrier.

What happened

The unsupervised child crawled beneath a fence and approached the wolves’ primary metal enclosure. A wolf approached and made contact with the toddler’s hand, zoo officials said.

At no time was the child inside the wolf’s enclosure, the facility’s review concluded. The family was not identified and the zoo described the injuries as minor.

Zoo response and safety measures

Zoo America said the animal’s action reflected natural behavior and was not a sign of aggression. Staff emphasized that guests must remain in designated areas and closely supervise children.

The park said habitats use multiple layers of protection, with clear signage and barriers. The facility is reviewing the fencing breach and the circumstances around the incident.

Location and accreditation

Zoo America is part of Hersheypark in Hershey, Pennsylvania. The entertainment campus includes a theme park, zoo, and boardwalk and touts itself as the largest amusement park in the U.S.

The zoo holds accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. It participates in the Species Survival Plan program to support sustainable, genetically diverse populations of select species.

Next steps and public guidance

Officials reiterated that visitor safety remains a top priority. They urged parents and guardians to supervise children closely near animal areas.

Filmogaz.com will follow updates as the zoo completes its internal review. Authorities did not release further details about the child’s injuries.
