Renowned Soloists Join Orchestra for Ripon Cathedral Performance
Renowned soloists Jack Liebeck and Tim Lowe will join the orchestra at Ripon Cathedral for a Saturday evening performance on April 25. The programme pairs solo concertos and symphonic works. Xen Kelsey will conduct the ensemble.
Programme highlights
Weber: Overture to Oberon
The concert opens with Weber’s overture to Oberon. The early Romantic work tells the story of the knight Hüon and his magical horn. The introduction features horn motifs played by the French horn section.
Brahms: Double Concerto
Soloists Liebeck (violin) and Lowe (cello) join the orchestra for Brahms’ Double Concerto. This is Brahms’ final orchestral composition. The duo will perform with conductor Xen Kelsey and the Ripon ensemble.
Dvořák: Symphony No. 7
The evening closes with Dvořák’s Symphony No. 7. Critics often consider it the high point of his symphonic work. The piece was commissioned by the London Philharmonic Society and draws on Czech patriotic feeling.
Soloists and background
Jack Liebeck is an internationally sought violinist. BBC Music praised his technical command and distinctive tonal quality. He has recorded for several film soundtracks, including period dramas and biopics.
Cellist Tim Lowe is noted for nimble technique and a strong, assured sound. Reviewers and presenters have highlighted his chamber and solo work. Lowe said performing Brahms with Liebeck, under Xen Kelsey, will bring drama, warmth and a triumphant A major finale to Ripon Cathedral.
