Wheaton Affordable Housing Project Secures $1M Federal Grant
Montgomery Housing Partnership has received $1 million in federal funding to move the Amherst redevelopment forward in Wheaton.
Filmogaz.com reports the Wheaton Affordable Housing Project received the grant to cover early-stage planning and approvals.
Project scope
The plan will replace a three-story garden-style apartment building. The existing structure contains 125 units.
Redevelopment will yield 272 rental units, 39 for-sale townhomes and a cultural arts center. The total equals 311 housing units.
Site and parcels
MHP will redevelop its current property and an adjacent parcel. The project is part of the Amherst Wheaton Arts Project.
Use of funds and fiscal context
The $1 million will fund predevelopment costs. These costs include multiple planning and permitting tasks.
- Design and architectural work
- Construction documents
- Building permits
- Land-use entitlements
The funding was included in the Fiscal Year 2026 minibus spending bill. The support lets MHP advance the project without taking on additional debt.
Officials’ statements
U.S. Sen. Chris Van Hollen emphasized the burden of rising housing costs. He said the funding expands affordable, accessible options in Wheaton.
U.S. Sen. Angela Alsobrooks framed the effort as creating economic opportunity and pathways to building wealth. She noted rent is high and homeownership remains out of reach for many.
Location and community impact
The complex will sit within a half-mile of the Wheaton Metro station. Proximity to transit is a core feature of the plan.
Officials say the redevelopment aims to provide more stable housing and greater economic security for Montgomery County families.
