Nanaimo Mayor Criticizes BC Ferries for Service Failures During Peak Travel
Frustration is rising among residents of Vancouver Island and Gulf Islands over service disruptions by BC Ferries. The Mayor of Nanaimo, Leonard Krog, has voiced significant concerns regarding these ongoing issues, which he attributes to a long-standing lack of investment in ferry infrastructure by various governments.
Nanaimo Mayor’s Criticism of BC Ferries
Krog represents nearly one million residents who depend on ferry services for travel and transportation. He stated that the recent failures highlight a persistent problem within the service. “This is essential public infrastructure,” Krog emphasized, underlining the need for urgent attention to this matter.
Service Disruptions Impacting Travel
- Multiple vessel issues have disrupted major ferry routes recently.
- The Spirit of Vancouver Island has resumed its service on the Tsawwassen-Swartz Bay run.
- BC Ferries continues to recommend that passengers arrive early for their sailings, with limited standby spots available.
The service failures escalated on April 4, when BC Ferries announced the cancellation of all sailings for two consecutive days on the Blubber Bay to Westview route. These cancellations were due to a mechanical issue with the Island Discovery ferry. In response, BC Ferries has arranged for alternative foot passenger services using two 12-seater water taxis.
Wider Implications of Service Issues
Problems also occurred on the Chemainus, Penelakut, and Thetis Island routes when a large tire became tangled in a ferry propeller, halting operations for three days. Eric McNeely, president of the BC Ferries Marine Workers’ Union, noted that disruptions on any route can create a ripple effect throughout the entire ferry system. “Anytime there’s service disruptions, it creates stress on the system,” he explained.
Frontline workers are faced with challenges that are not within their control. McNeely pointed out that these workers implement policies determined by upper management, indicating that the responsibility for service failures lies beyond their level of operation. “Union members are not the ones who have the yes-or-no vote,” he added, referencing decision-making responsibilities held at the executive level in Victoria.
Travel Recommendations for Passengers
For travelers without prior reservations, BC Ferries advises preparing for limited standby space and potentially long delays. Passengers may need to reconsider their travel plans to accommodate these ongoing service issues within the BC Ferries system.
