Samsung Phases Out Messages App, Adopts Google Messages

Samsung has announced the discontinuation of its Messages app in the United States, with the transition set for July 2026. The company plans to replace its service with Google Messages, offering users a guided pathway for the switch.

Transition from Samsung Messages to Google Messages

After the set date, Samsung Messages will no longer function for typical messaging except for emergency numbers and contacts. The app will also be removed from the Galaxy Store, restricting new downloads. Notably, users of the Galaxy S26 have already lost access to the Samsung Messages app.

This transition is applicable for Galaxy devices running Android 12 and newer versions. However, devices released before 2022 will remain unaffected by this end of service announcement.

User Guidance and Advantages of Google Messages

To facilitate the switch, Samsung Messages will provide in-app notifications containing instructions to migrate to Google Messages. Users on Android 14 or later will observe that the Google Messages icon will automatically move to the homescreen dock once the change occurs.

  • Open Google Messages after downloading it.
  • A prompt will request you to set it as your default SMS app.
  • Select ‘Set default SMS app.’
  • Choose Google Messages, identified by a white icon with a blue conversation bubble.
  • Tap ‘Set as default’ to complete the process.

Continued Operations on Other Devices

The discontinuation of Samsung Messages also affects Tizen OS watches. Although users won’t access the full message conversation history, they can still read and send text messages.

For those using pre-2022 Samsung devices, switching apps might temporarily disrupt ongoing RCS conversations. However, these conversations can resume once both users adopt Google Messages. Standard MMS and SMS functionalities will remain available throughout this period.

Key Features of Google Messages

Samsung emphasizes several advantages that Google Messages offers, including:

  • Improved Security: AI-driven scam detection and spam filtering help ensure a safer messaging experience.
  • RCS Messaging: Enhanced photo and video sharing, real-time typing indicators, and improved group chat functionalities.
  • Expressive AI Features: Utilizing Gemini features for smarter replies and photo modifications.
  • Multi-Device Connectivity: Seamless chat continuity across phones, tablets, and smartwatches.

This strategic transition reflects Samsung’s commitment to enhancing user experience while maintaining robust messaging options through partnerships with well-established services like Google Messages.
